A top emergency room doctor at a major Manhattan hospital died by suicide on April 26, 2020.
Dr. Lorna M. Breen, M.D., medical director of the emergency department at New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, died in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she was staying with family.
New York-Presbyterian The Allen Hospital is a 200-bed hospital at the northern tip of Manhattan that at times had as many as 170 patients with COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus. As of April 7, there had been 59 patient deaths at the hospital, according to an internal document.
After recovering from the COVID-19 virus at her family's home in Virginia, Dr. Breen tragically took her own life. Her father was quoted saying his daughter was having an incredibly hard time dealing with the amount of death she had just experienced.
This ride will honor Dr. Breen 's father's wish to honor his daughter as a hero and victim of this horrific event. In her father's words,
"She went down in the trenches and was killed by the enemy on the front line," Philip Breen said. "She loved New York and wouldn't hear about living anywhere else. She loved her coworkers and did what she could for them.""I just want people to know how special she was," he added.
The proceeds will be donated in her name to support the medical heroes that were lost on the front lines fighting the pandemic.
Teams of 4 riders will ride their road bicycles across the state of Nevada.
Riders will begin on the Eastern side of the state and end with a ceremony in Fallon, Nevada
